SS430 wire has a higher strength than SS316L. It is often used for mouth-to-lung vaping and restricted airflow setups. While it may not provide the same level of flavor as SS316L, it is a good choice for those looking for a cooler vape.

  • SS304 (Stainless Steel 304)

SS304 wire is less commonly used in vaping but offers decent performance. It has similar characteristics to SS316L wire but with a slightly higher resistance. If you prefer a warmer vape, SS304 may be a suitable option.

  • 28 Gauge (0.32mm)

3. Stainless steel vape wire vs Kanthal A1 wire

Stainless steel vape wire and regular Kanthal wire may look the same, but they are completely different in terms of their ability to be used.

I find that stainless steel is much easier to work with. You can bend the coils into shape much easier as it requires less effort to create wraps 316l wire.

You can use your hands to bend the wire; you don’t necessarily need columns to help you. It also holds its shape very well, and I noticed that when I was installing this type of coil, the core didn’t get obstructed at all and always kept its original shape.

I noticed with Kanthal wire that you must adjust the coil with tweezers, even if you did it perfectly before. Ramp-up time is also much more significant; press the fire button on a stainless steel coil, and you get an immediate response.

Kanthal, although cheaper, there is a slight delay in the ramp-up at the start of the vape, but most novice vapors would not notice these small imperfections.

4. Nichrome 80 vs Stainless Steel Wire

Nichrome is an alloy with corrosion resistance. The common combination to construct the wire is 80% nickel and 20% chromium.

Therefore, you may see vaping vendors list the wire as nichrome 80. If you have nickel allergies, you may want to avoid using Nichrome wire altogether.

Nichrome wire is very similar to regular Kanthal wire. It has a low resistance and heats up very quickly. However, I have found that stainless steel heats up a little faster, and the material is less susceptible to damage when the coils are dry-fired.

The main advantage of using a stainless steel coil over a nichrome coil is the suppleness you get to vape in TC and VW modes.

Temperature control allows the vape mod to detect when the coil is heating up automatically and if the coil gets too hot, it will reduce it to prevent the cotton from burning.

You will notice that your stainless steel coils last longer when used in TC mode.

5. Is stainless steel safe for vaping?

When I first discovered that stainless steel vaping wire could be used for vaping, along with the benefits over regular Kanthal wire, my main concern was its safety levels.

When shopping for stainless steel wire, you must ensure it is labeled as medical grade.

Other types of wire may contain steel wire impurities or other harmful coatings that can be potentially harmful when vaping. Stainless steel wire rated 304, 316L, and 317L is recommended for vaping.

I would not recommend using any other grades not mentioned in this blog post.

6. Stainless steel 316l wire advantages and disadvantages

316L stainless steel wire is arguably the most versatile and widely usable for vaping coils. It performs excellently in wattage and temperature control modes, providing flexibility that other wires like Kanthal lack.

316L contains low carbon for reduced resistance and is classified as a surgical grade for purity and safety.

Coils made from 316L have quick ramp-up time, pure flavor production, and exceptional durability lasting up to 2 months. The main drawback is the potential trace nickel content in the lower-quality wire. This can be avoided by purchasing medical-grade 316L from reputable vape shops. Availability may also be limited compared to cheaper options like Kanthal.

316L stainless steel is an excellent all-around vape wire for beginners and advanced users. It enables wattage and temperature control with quick heating, pure taste, and coil longevity. For versatile performance with minimal compromises, 316L is hard to beat.
